- 1945 Two brothers, J. C. and K. C. Mahindra, set up a steel trading firm in Bombay with Ghulam Mohammed on 2 October 1945 and called it Mahindra & Mohammed. The first vehicles were Willys jeeps shipped in from the United States in kit form and assembled at Mazagon, and the company says it started assembling jeep-type vehicles in 1949. It went public in 1955 and listed its shares on the Bombay Stock Exchange in 1956, and the registration number issued in 1945 still identifies it today.
Mahindra
1 marque
A family firm that never acquired a parent. The founders' descendants, and the private company and benefit trust that hold shares alongside them, own less than a fifth of it between them; the rest is with funds and insurers in India and abroad. It began by assembling Willys jeeps after the war and has carried its own badge ever since.
