- 1945 Tata Motors was incorporated on 1 September 1945 as Tata Locomotive and Engineering Company Limited, a builder of steam locomotives; it began making commercial vehicles in 1954, was renamed Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company in 1960 and took the Tata Motors name in 2003. The corporate identity number issued in 1945 still identifies the company today.
- 2025 Tata Motors split in two on 1 October 2025. The commercial vehicle business was demerged into TML Commercial Vehicles Limited, which took the Tata Motors name and listed separately in November 2025; the original company kept the passenger vehicle and electric vehicle businesses and Jaguar Land Rover, and was renamed Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited. Ownership of Jaguar Land Rover did not move - the company holding it is the same one under a new name.
