29 years, one owner

The year is coloured by whoever held it at the time.

  1. 1997 Chery began on 8 January 1997, when the Wuhu Finance Bureau and Wuhu Construction Corporation jointly set up Anhui Auto Parts Co., Ltd. (安徽汽車零部件有限公司) with registered capital of RMB 1.68 billion, subscribed 89.29 percent and 10.71 percent respectively. Chery's Hong Kong listing prospectus opens its history there — "Our history can be traced back to 1997, when Anhui Auto Parts Co., Ltd. (安徽汽車零部件有限公司), the predecessor of our Company, was established" — and its first milestone is the same year: "We commenced construction of Engine Plant No. 1, marking the beginning of our Group's development". The first self-developed engine and the first sedan, No. 000001 "Fulwin", followed in 1999. The legal person has been continuous since: on 24 March 2008 the company was converted from a limited liability company into a joint stock limited company and took the name Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. (奇瑞汽車股份有限公司). Chery's own investor page dates itself the same way in both languages, "Since our founding in 1997" and 「自1997年成立以来」.
  2. 2025 Chery Holding Group Co., Ltd. (奇瑞控股集團有限公司) had been Chery Automobile's controlling shareholder since it was set up in October 2010, and on 20 January 2025 it ceased to be a shareholder at all. In a restructuring carried out to flatten the ownership ahead of the Hong Kong listing, the 42.32 percent of Chery Automobile that Chery Holding held was transferred to Chery Holding's own ten shareholders in proportion to their holdings in Chery Holding: no outside buyer was involved, and the prospectus notes that on a see-through basis "none of the Shareholders has gained or lost control in our Company, or changed their ranking or shareholding percentage". The audited 2025 accounts state the result in one sentence: "Upon completion of the equity transfer on January 20, 2025, Chery Holding no longer holds any shares in the Company, and the Company has neither holding company nor ultimate holding company." Wuhu Investment Holding, the investment arm on the Wuhu municipal side, became the single largest shareholder at 21.17 percent, diluted to 20.08 percent on listing, and the prospectus records the PRC legal adviser's conclusion that Chery "is not a state-owned enterprise, a state-controlled enterprise (國有控股企業) or a state-actually-controlled enterprise (國有實際控制企業)". Chery Holding still exists as a diversified group covering commercial vehicles, financial investment and trade in services; it is no longer on Chery Automobile's ownership chain and is not collected here.
  3. 2025 Chery Automobile's H shares began trading on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the code 9973 at nine in the morning on 25 September 2025. The company issued and allotted 297,397,000 new H shares at HK$30.75 each, with a further 41,375,900 on 27 October on a partial exercise of the over-allotment option, and received net proceeds of about HK$10,128.6 million. The offering was of new shares to the market, so it moved no controlling stake — Wuhu Investment Holding was diluted from 21.17 to 20.08 percent and stayed the single largest shareholder — but it is recorded rather than deferred because it is the closing step of the restructuring that ended Chery Holding's control. The prospectus gives as a purpose of the January 2025 equity transfer that it would "balance the interest of all Shareholders in our Company's future financing activities and facilitate our Company's capital market operations", and the annual report calls 2025 "the inaugural year in which Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. was officially listed on the Main Board".
Chery 2 marques

Chery names its brands rather than buying them, and has led Chinese passenger-car exports for more than twenty years. Its holding company handed its shares straight to its own shareholders in 2025, leaving the listed company with no parent at all — Wuhu's state investment arm, where the money started, is now only the largest holder.
