- 1970 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries set up Mitsubishi Motors Corporation as a wholly owned subsidiary in April 1970 and transferred its automobile division to it, which began trading as Mitsubishi Motors in June 1970, according to the history in Mitsubishi Motors' securities report.
- 1988 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' control of Mitsubishi Motors ended with the carmaker's stock market listing. Mitsubishi Motors' shares were listed on the first sections of the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya stock exchanges in December 1988. The International Directory of Company Histories records that, to make way for the listing, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries agreed to reduce its holding to 25 percent while remaining the largest shareholder, and that Chrysler raised its own to over 20 percent. Mitsubishi Motors' securities report for the year to March 2006, the earliest it publishes online, records no parent company and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as an other affiliated company holding 15.30% of the shares. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Chrysler are not in the dataset.
