Buick became part of General Motors in 1908: William C. Durant, who had taken control of the Buick Motor Company in 1904, used it to found General Motors that September, and General Motors names Buick as one of the two brands it began with.

- 1903 David Dunbar Buick incorporated the Buick Motor Company on 19 May 1903 in Detroit, out of the engine business he had been running since about 1900; the firm was sold to the Flint Wagon Works that autumn and moved to Flint.
