Dacia is Romanian by birth and French by ownership.
Renault bought control of Dacia from the Romanian State in 1999.
Where it sits
Two levels. A figure marks a company boundary crossed; a word means the figure was never published.
Dacia
60 years, two owners since 1980
The year is coloured by whoever held it at the time.
- 1966 Dacia began with the car plant the Romanian State built at Colibași, now Mioveni, under licence from Renault. Dacia's own history records that on 6 September 1966 the Romanian State and the Régie nationale des usines Renault signed the framework contract in Bucharest, and that the first cars, Renault 8s badged Dacia 1100, left the assembly line on 3 August 1968.
- 1999 Renault bought control of Dacia from the Romanian State in 1999. Its 1999 annual report says that "on September 29, 1999, Dacia became our new brand. Dacia is now in the private sector, with Renault holding 51% and the Romanian state the remainder", and Dacia's own history records that Renault Group bought 51% of Dacia's shares for 50 million US dollars and undertook to invest 219 million dollars by 2003. Renault Group's own account of the acquisition gives a different date, "2 juillet 1999", for the day "the final agreement is signed in Bucharest": the two are the signing and the completion, and the month recorded here is the completion.
Renault
3 marques
Nationalised in 1945 and privatised in 1996, Renault has no controlling shareholder: the French state is the largest, and Nissan holds shares from an alliance in which each company owns part of the other. Dacia and Alpine were bought as going concerns rather than invented.
