Eighteen years, one owner

The year is coloured by whoever held it at the time.

  1. 2008 GAC set up a company to build its own cars two years before it had one to sell. Its 2010 annual report defines it as "GAMC — Guangzhou Automobile Group Motor Co. Ltd. (廣州汽車集團乘用車有限公司), a company incorporated on 21 July 2008 under PRC law and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of our Company". The badge came later: the same report records that "In 2010, GAMC fully completed the construction of vehicles and engines plants and successfully achieved mass production of vehicles and engines and launched the first proprietary brand of sedan 'Trumpchi'", that 500 Trumpchi sedans served as reception cars for the 16th Asian Games that November, and that "On 20 December 2010, Trumpchi officially commenced its commercial sales". The company has since shortened its name twice, to 广汽乘用车有限公司 and then to 广汽传祺汽车有限公司, the brand's own name, which is how GAC's current reports define it. It has been wholly owned by GAC throughout.

GAC's own badges include Trumpchi, which it built a company around two years before it had a car to sell, and Aion and Hyptec, which belong to an electric-car subsidiary that took outside investors in without changing hands. The joint ventures it half owns build Hondas and Toyotas for China. Guangzhou's city government controls the group through an unlisted holding company rather than holding the shares itself.
