The top

45 years, one owner

The year is coloured by whoever held it at the time.

  1. 1981 Changan entered car-making in 1981, converting military production to civilian use. Its own annual report puts it in one line — 「1981 年响应『军转民』号召,从零起步进军汽车领域,奠定发展根基」 — and the English version of the same report renders it "In 1981, responding to the national initiative to convert military technology for civilian use, the Company entered the automotive" business. Its own global site makes the same claim today, describing 45 years of car-making. The company that holds the listing is much younger: 「系于 1996 年 10 月经重庆市注册的股份有限公司。1997 年 6 月在深圳证券交易所上市」, registered in Chongqing in October 1996 and listed the following June, trading as two share classes on the one exchange, 000625 for the A shares and 200625 for the B shares. The wider group tells a longer story still, tracing its descent to an arsenal founded in Shanghai in 1862; Wikidata carries that year, no Changan filing retrieved states it, and the arsenal built no vehicles. The contract dates the business rather than the shell or the lineage, so 1981 is recorded and the other two years are kept in conflicts.

Changan names its own brands rather than buying them, and the joint ventures on its books build Fords and Mazdas for China. The state owns it through a chain of holding companies that were renamed and then split apart in 2025, which leaves the listed company itself as the name anyone outside China recognises.
