1. 1941 Willys-Overland signed the War Department contract for the first military Jeep in July 1941, a year after the US Army had asked 135 manufacturers for a light reconnaissance vehicle and only Bantam, Willys and Ford answered.
2. 1980 Renault took control of American Motors Corporation, the owner of the Jeep brand, when AMC shareholders voted in December 1980 to approve a Renault takeover after AMC's banks would not extend further credit. The two companies had signed their first agreement in 1979, and Renault's holding is put at 46.4 percent for 1980 and at 46 percent when the merger was completed in 1982, so Renault controlled AMC as its principal shareholder rather than through a majority. It held control until it sold its stake to Chrysler in 1987. Neither party is in the dataset: American Motors was absorbed into Chrysler, and Renault was never collected as an owner of a marque in this dataset.
3. 1987 Chrysler Corporation acquired American Motors Corporation, and with it the Jeep brand, on 5 August 1987, after AMC agreed to the deal on 20 May 1987; Jeep became part of Chrysler's Jeep/Eagle Division. AMC had been controlled by Renault since December 1980, and the sale began in March 1987 when Renault agreed to sell Chrysler its stake of about 46 percent, so Jeep's controlling owner changed from Renault to Chrysler. Neither party is in the dataset: American Motors was absorbed into Chrysler, and Chrysler Corporation combined with Daimler-Benz in 1998.
4. 1998 Chrysler Corporation combined with Daimler-Benz AG on 12 November 1998 to form DaimlerChrysler AG, and Jeep, one of Chrysler Corporation's brands, became one of the brands of DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group, which DaimlerChrysler's own filings describe as selling cars and trucks under the brand names Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge. Chrysler Corporation, the brand's owner until then, is not in the dataset. DaimlerChrysler AG is recorded as mercedes-benz-group, the dataset's name for the continuous Daimler business from 1926, which was renamed Daimler AG in 2007 and Mercedes-Benz Group AG in 2022.
5. 2007 DaimlerChrysler transferred an 80.1 percent controlling interest in its Chrysler activities, and with them the Jeep brand, to CG Investment Group, LLC, a fund affiliated with Cerberus Capital Management L.P., on 3 August 2007, keeping a 19.9 percent non-controlling interest in Chrysler Holding LLC; it renamed itself Daimler AG that October. Cerberus is not in the dataset.
6. 2009 Chrysler LLC, the Cerberus-controlled company that owned the Jeep brand, filed for bankruptcy protection in April 2009 and on 10 June 2009 sold its principal operating assets to a new company, Chrysler Group LLC, under section 363 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. Chrysler Group LLC issued its membership interests to the UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust, which took 67.7 percent, to Fiat S.p.A., which took 20 percent with rights to increase it, and to the United States Treasury and the Canadian government. Chrysler Group's own report names Jeep among the brands it sells. None of the parties is in the dataset, and Fiat's interest did not amount to control until 2011.
7. 2011 Fiat S.p.A. took control of Chrysler Group LLC, and with it the Jeep brand, on 24 May 2011, when it acquired a further 16 percent of the company, taking its interest to 46 percent on a fully diluted basis, and options that became exercisable that day gave it potential voting rights amounting to control; Fiat consolidated Chrysler Group from 1 June 2011 and held 58.5 percent by early 2012, with the UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust, the majority member since 2009, holding the rest. Neither party is in the dataset: Fiat S.p.A. merged into Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. in 2014.

9. 2021 Jeep came under Stellantis on 16 January 2021, when the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Groupe PSA took effect and Jeep was named as one of the fourteen brands of the combined company.
